Remembering Pauline the 9th Ward pit bull

Hello friends of Dogs of the 9th Ward and Pauline,

I am devastated to have to tell you that yesterday, exactly one week shy of a year after her rescue, Pauline died in the ICU of acute fulminating myasthenia gravis, an immune deficiency disorder. We did everything we could to save her, and specialists were consulted from all over the counrty. Yesterday, while visiting Pauline, I asked her to hang on for one more day to let us try one more medication. But I guess she just didn't have it in her, because she went into respiratory paralysis only a few hours later and was never revived.

Of course I am stunned and shocked. Pauline was a mere 1.5 years old and the picture of health up until a couple weeks ago. My friend described her as "constantly ecstatic," and I think that's an apt description. For just under one year, she was truly the happiest pitty in the world. Pauline was recognized everywhere she went. People would ask, "Is that THAT dog?" and "Is that the pink puppy??" Pauline always met them with a smiling face and a wagging tail.

Pauline changed my life, and lives of the 55 other dogs who have come through D9 this year. I want to thank everyone who supported Pauline and me throughout this year. Pauline made something very special happen, and I credit her with bringing joy into my world and with saving the lives of 55 dogs.

Please help turn Pauline's death into a chance at a new life for more stray and abandoned dogs in the 9th Ward. We are asking for donations in memory of Pauline to help us rescue even more dogs in the next year. Please share this information with your friends and let them know how to help. We are accepting donations at Prytania Veterinary Hospital (Prytania and Upperline, 504.899.2828), via paypal to help.pauline@gmail.com, or by checks made payable to Dr. Dusty Allen, sent to Dogs of the 9th Ward, 2315 Congress, NO LA 70117.

Thanks again for your help and support throughout this year. Pauline and I are both extremely grateful. Attached are pictures of Pauline's -- and my -- amazing year.

Gratefully,

Kelly

  6. So sad, I remember reading her blogs everyday and checking back to see new posts. I am just glad that she has begun a legacy.....just like Sula did for Ken Foster.......this is the perfect example of how it only takes one to make a difference.....that is what they were put on this earth to do. God is good.
    Thank you Pauline!!!!

  7. Thank you. Your work is so important, and Pauline was a beautiful seed to a field of dreams. I didn't know her, but I can tell from her picture she was "that" dog. May you be blessed in your work, and know that Pauline lives on. Peace to you.
