Help needed for HW+ dogs!

Heartworm disease, which is spread by mosquitos, is rampant in the Gulf South. In New Orleans, virtually every dog who is not kept on heartworm preventative contracts heartworm disease.

Four of our pit rescues are no exception. They are all heartworm positive, and need to be treated before they can start their new lives with forever families.

Even though we are getting a great deal on treatment, heartworm treatment is expensive. The regular, non-rescue rate is around $600-$1000+ for a medium to large dog. There is currently a shortage of the drug required to treat for heartworms, but our wonderful vet has set some aside just for us!

Each of these four amazing dogs needs you, so please help us help them! If you prefer, you can also donate to Prytania Veterinary Hospital in person or by mail (4907 Prytania, NO LA 70115). Just reference Dogs of the 9th Ward Rescue Account.

Huge thanks to Dr. B at Prytania Vet and Dr. Jessica with Pets R Our World Mobile vet clinic for all their help and support!

SWEET P is an adorable, super-fun 2-year-old pit/bulldog mix who came to rescue after her owner was incarcerated. She loves all people and other dogs, though she is dog-dominant. She is crate trained and house trained. Sweet P weighs 60 pounds and will be ready to find true love after she finishes heartworm treatment.

FLEA is a really happy, sweet little cow-spotted pit mix boy. He worships people, but needs to work on his manners, as he's constantly excited and does everything with a true pit bull joi de vivre. He is about 3-4 years old and will weigh around 45 pounds when at a healthy weight. He is crate trained and learning obedience. He likes to play with other dogs. Flea will be ready to go home after heartworm treatment.

EMMA is an energetic, affectionate brindle pit girl who was found running in the rain in the 7th Ward. She adores all people and other dogs. She's even fine with cats and chickens! She is house trained, crate trained, leash trained, and knows basic obedience. Emma is about 2.5 years old and weighs 45 pounds. She will be ready to go to her forever home after she is treated for heartworms.

KEEM was found wandering near the Florida Projects, severely underweight and sick. He has been treated for infections and is starting to gain weight. Keem has had a rough life and needs love and stability in his new home. He absolutely loves people, but won't be placed with other dogs or cats. He is crate trained and is starting to work on obedience. Keem will weigh around 65 pounds when at a healthy weight. He will soon be neutered and then will be ready to go home after finishing heartworm treatment.
